I know I know everyone is crazy about sambar and each have their own style of preparing it. The sambar that I have made here has been a big hit in my family with everyone, so I want to share it with others too. This sambar is mostly found in thirunelveli, it’s in TN.I just love it…… its excellent with all type of breakfast even with vadai and pongal. Try this for sure.
- Prep Time : 10 minutes
- Cook Time : 20 minutes
- Toor dal - 1 cup
- Radish/mulangi,cut round - 1
- Drumstick - 1
- Small onion - 1/2 cup
- Tomato,cubed - 2
- Green chillies,long slit - 7
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- Red chilly powder - 1 tsp
- Dhania powder/coriander powder - 2 tsp
- Asofaetida(hing) - 1/4 tsp
- Salt to taste
- For Seasoning
- Ghee/Oil - 3 tsp
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Urad dal(ulandham paruppu) - 1/2 tsp
- Jeera - 1/2 tsp
- Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
- Curry leaves - as per requirement
- To Blend :(without adding water)
- Coconut,grated - 4 tsp
- Jeera - 1 tsp
1.Boil the toor dal with 3 glass of water for 10 min in cooker and keep it aside.
2.separate the dal and keep the water separately.soak tamarind in hot water too.
3.Now boil drumstick & radish separately in hot water for 10 min until they are ¾ th cooked.
4.Now heat the kadai and do the tempering once its done fry the radish and drumstick for a min,then add onion saute till they change colour.
5.Now add chillies fry them for sometime then add tomatoes,tamarind water to the mix let it boil for 2 min till the raw smell goes off.
6.Then add some turmeric powder, chilly pow, turmeric pow , asofoetida and salt.let it boil for a min.
7.Pour the dal water instead of regular water because this adds very good flavor to sambar.
8.Let the sambar boil for 10 min once it starts to thicken add some blended paste (ie) grind coconut ,jeera,onion together and let it cook for a min.Then add the freshly chopped coriander leaves & remove from fire.
