Tamarind Rice(Puliyodharai)
Tamarind Rice is my favorite dish. I just love it. I know most of them like Biryani or some other heavy dish but to me tamarind rice is divine, I can eat it whole day. Whenever I make it I will start tasting and I tend to finish half of the rice. I am that much hooked to it. This dish stays fresh and tasty even for 2 days. So its definitely a must have dish for long drives.

- Salt to taste - 2 tsp
- For Seasoning
- Oil(gingelly oil) - 5 tsp
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Urad dal(ulandham paruppu) - 1 tsp
- Channa dal/kadala paruppu - 1 tsp
- Fenugreek seeds/Vendhayam - 1/2 tsp
- Jeera - 1 1/2 tsp
- Groundnut/peanut - 3-4 tsp
- Asofaetida(hing) - 2 pinch
- Curry leaves - as per requirement
- To Ground:(Dry Roast)
- Seasame seed(Black) - 2 tsp
- Coriander seeds/dhania - 2 tsp
- Channa dal/kadala paruppu - 1 1/2 tsp
- Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
Instructions
1. In a pan/Kadai pour some gingery oil(This taste best for tamarind rice)when its hot do the seasoning mentioned above. When you fry the red chillies make sure its fried to dark brown not black but brown in color this gives a nice spiciness to the dish.
2. To this pour tamarind paste. I usually soak tamarind in a cup of warm water and use at least 2 cups of water to dilute and remove the pulp. Filter it and pour it to the seasoning. Let it boil for 4 mins,to this add turmeric powder and salt and let it boil till it thickens(That would take 15 mins or more)Then remove from fire.
3. Now while its boiling take another pan and dry fry sesame/Yellu first when a nice aroma smell from sesame comes out remove it from pan. Then fry dhania, fenugreek and Channa dal separately for few mins and let it cool . Then add this to a blender and make a fine powder.
4. Now when the rice is warm enough add the tamarind paste to the rice and mix it according to your preference. To this add the ground powder as per taste and stir it well in a big bowl. Serve it with Potato chips and enjoy the yummy tangy dish.
