Vazhaipoo Vadai(Plantain Flower)
When I think of vazhai poo all I used to think was its too much time consuming because I never make it much at home. My mom used to make this vadai at least once in a month and my dad loves it. She is a queen when it comes to vadas, she makes so many variety of snacks that too very healthy ones. So following my mom I have also started making this. Even though vazhai poriyal is quite common in our house,I prefer to make this vadai for our evening snacks. When I make a large batch I save some for next day lunch. I love it with rasam or sambhar and they taste so good as a side dish. Make it for your guest they will love it and try to feed your kids too,its very healthy for them.
- Prep Time : 15 minutes
- Cook Time : 10 minutes
- Yield : 4
Ingredients
- Vazhai poo(Plantain flower) - 1/2(I only use half of it full is little too much,so try to make other half for poriyal)
- Channa dal/kadala paruppu - 1/2 cup(soaked in water)
- Dry red chillies - 5
- Onion,finelly chopped - 1
- Ginger,finely chopped - 2 tsp
- Asofaetida(hing) - a pinch
- Fennel seeds/Sombhu - 2 tsp
- Coriander leaves,finely chopped - 3 tsp
- Curry leaves - 2 tsp
- Salt to taste - 1/2 tsp
Instructions
1. Soak channa dal for 1-2 hrs in water. Mean while remove the plantain flower.
2. This is very important part, while handling the vazhai poo/plantain flower the soft skin like feather that is seen below should be removed and the flower stock kind should be removed from above. This is very important because this brings the bitterness in vadai if its not removed properly. Wash them well.
3. Now finely chop the vazhai poo and add little water in a cup and keep in a microwave for 2 mins to steam them. Then remove it and keep it aside. In a blender add the channa dal and red chillies and grind them coarse. Now add the vazhai poo and beat them in a pulse mode for a sec and remove from blender. Transfer this to a cup.
4. Now add onions, fennel seed, chopped ginger, curry leaves, hing, coriander leaves and mix them all well. Then heat oil in a kadai.
5. Heat oil to the level where the vadas can get immersed nicely. Now while the oil is getting hot, roll the mixture in your hand like balls and then flatten them in a center and then slowly slide it into the oil. Make 3-4 vadas at a time. Then slowly turn them on both side till a golden color is reached. Enjoy the crispy and delicious vadai for your evening tea time.
