Kadala Curry/Black channa curry(Kerala Special)
Another Kerala delight that goes well with Appam and Puttu.I like it with roti/chapathi too.We dont use much black channa but I know its very healthy so I try to prepare this dish when I make Appam.I love Malayalis food they are so tasty.Most of them are steamed and have a healthy addition of curry to them.Best breakfast dish I must say.

Ingredients
- Black channa(kala channa) - 1 cup
- Onion,finely chopped - 1
- Green chillies - 4
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- Cocnut milk(optional) - 1/4 cup
- To make paste(fry&powder)
- Dry red chillies - 5
- Cinnamon stick - 1/2 stick
- Cloves - 2
- Cardamom(Elachi) - 1
- Sombhu/Fennel seed - 1 tsp
- Coriander seeds/dhania - 2 tsp
- Coconut,grated - 4 tsp
- Onion,finely chopped - 4 tsp
- Garlic pieces - 3
- Salt to taste
- For Seasoning
- Coconut oil - 3 tsp
- Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
- Curry leaves - as per taste
- Onion,finely chopped - 1/2 cup
- Green chillies,long slit - 4
- Jeera - 1/2 tsp
Instructions
1.Soak the black channa or kala channa over night,say 8 hrs.Then in a pressure cooker pour 2 glass of water for 1 cup channa.Then steam it for 15-20 mins.Keep the water and channa separate ,dont throw the water.
2.In a pan fry half onion,garlic,cinnamon stick,cardamom,cloves,grated coconut,dry red chillies,dhania/coriander seeds,fennel seeds one by one and keep it separate.Let it cool down.
3.Now in a blender grind the spices to fine powder.Add some water and make it to paste.
4.Heat kadai/pan and pour some oil add the seasoning items one by one then add the grounded paste to this and saute for sometime till the raw smell goes off.
5.Now add the water that was taken from channa and add to it.Let it cook for few mins.Now add the cooked black channa.Then add turmeric powder and salt and let it cook for 10 mins.
6.Now once the oil starts to ooze out little bit add coconut milk little bit and stir for a min.Then remove from fire.Coconut milk is optional.I like the taste so I add it.This kadala curry goes well with Appam,Puttu and Chapathi/Roti.

Step 4 says “add the seasoning items one by one”. What would you include? Just mustard seeds?
BTW….nowhere in the description you have mentioned to add the kadalai although I figure it would be step 5.
