Misal Pav

By December 14, 2012

I got the opportunity to make this mouth drooling recipe by joining a wonderful group called SNC(South VS North Challenge) Yep sounds interesting right???that's correct that's how I was pulled inside this challenge. Divya MASTER mind and creator behind this wonderful event was kind enough to include me in her circle.
snc challenge,south,north,south vs north

This is the 3rd month challenge. The rules are pretty interesting. There are 47 members in their SNC group and its divided into two where SOUTH and NORTH challenge against each other. North Team will ask the south group to make one North Indian dish as challenge and south will have to make it. Same way South Team will give our South Indian recipe to North Team and the challenge will begin. The winner calculation is pretty big process so click here to know in detail.
The challenge for December is now open.... challengers are:
1. Sherin from Kuk's Kitchen has challenged the North Team to make the crispy and tasty MEDHU VADA.
2. Meena from Random Rumblings has challenged a mouth watering street side food MISAL PAV.
This task has to be completed by the month end of DEC 31 and here I go to explain my recipe.

Misal Pav is perfect for dinner. I felt so bad how I missed such a wonderful dish when I went to Pune, next time When I am in India I must taste it. I am a big lover of Pav bread Recipes an I was super excited to try this. The process is little lengthy but when you taste your misal pav you will feel that every effort is Worth it. It is not only gravy but it has dry and fresh sprouts mix and then farsan mix(sweet and tangy mixture mix) is also added and then topped with onion and tomatoes and garnished with fresh coriander leaves and they look so colorful and its stunning. I can guarantee that one cannot resist its charm.
I belong to South Team and we have been challenged to make MISAL PAV and here goes the recipe of how to make this yummy drooling Maharashtra Street Side food MISAL PAV.

  • Prep Time : 15 minutes
  • Cook Time : 30-40 minutes
  • Yield : 4

Ingredients

Instructions

First step to make Gravy/Rassa/Kut:

1. In a pan add some oil then when its hot enough saute ginger garlic paste till the raw smell is gone, then add onion, tomatoes and saute them till the get little pulpy. To this add grated coconut and saute them for a min.
2. Remove  from fire, let it cool down. Then grind them to paste and add them back to the pan adding little oil to the pan and then pour the gravy paste.

3. To this add turmeric powder, chilly powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala and salt. Saute them till the raw masala smell is gone and the oil starts to collect in middle by bubbling up. Now the gravy is ready keep in separate in a bowl.
How To Make Usal:

4. Soak moth beans/Matki in the night for 8-10 hrs. Then wash it well and tie it in a dry cloth to get sprouts. Matki sprouts are traditionally used in misal pav but if you don't get it in store you can use white peas too.

5. Now in pan add some oil and add ginger garlic paste saute them well ,then to this add matki sprouts/Moth bean sprouts and fry for few more mins. Then add boiled potatoes(cube them to small pieces). To this add Goda masala (If you don't have Goda masala just use turmeric powder & red chilly powder)then add salt to taste.

6. Add 1 cup of water and let it boil for 5 mins. The sprout gives little bitterness add little sugar to remove the bitterness and when the water gets boiled completely and becomes dry remove them and keep it separate in a bowl.

7. Now this is how farsan looks like sweet and spicy filled mixture. Now Chop onion, tomatoes, lemon and coriander leaves.

HOW TO SERVE MISAL PAV????
Well that's easy first in a bowl spread moth sprout mix then on top of it add the gravy then on top of it add farsan. Then sprinkle onions, tomatoes and coriander leaves. To this squeeze lemon juice and mix it well. Serve it hot hot with yummy Pav.
