The best breakfast which is extremely healthy & easy for digestion.A very common Tamilian dish. When I think of this dish I can remember temples, where they will serve this as prasadham in a small bowl. There will be visitors who go to temple just to eat this. Its made on auspicious days in temple and at home.In villages the first harvesting takes place and this is the main food that is offered to god as a gracious gift by the farmers as a symbol of gratitude. When the freshly harvested rice is combined with the dal& ghee it just taste very divine.

  • Prep Time : 10 minutes
  • Cook Time : 20 minutes
  • Yield : 2-4

Ingredients

Instructions

1.Combine both rice and dal together in a rice cooker and add exactly 5 glasses of water for the measurement given.

2.Add some green chillies, whole pepper little bit and close the lid of the pressure cooker.Let it cook till the whistles goes 5 times at least or leave it for 5-7 mins.Pongal has to be little loose its tends to get thick while adding ghee at the end so its best to add more water in the beginning itself.

3.Once they get cooled down remove the lid and check if they are finely mashed if not smash it using a ladle nicely. The rice and dal should get cooked 90%.

4.Now heat ghee in kadai/pan and do the seasoning one by one as mentioned then pour them to the rice mix.We can add more ghee if you prefer. Then mix it well.
5.Serve this hot with sambar and coconut chutney.
