Paruppu Urundai Kuzhambu(Lentils dumpling curry)

Paruppu urundai kuzhambhu,a typical  "Chettinad" dish is very famous in south india, lentils dumpling/balls which looks a lot like our north side koftas are the main attraction to this dish,the dumplings are steamed &  immersed in to the tamarind gravy  which makes it so relishing.Even though its time consuming its worth the time.Must try recipe.....

  • Prep Time : 10 minutes
  • Cook Time : 20 minutes
  • Yield : 2-4

Ingredients

Instructions

1.Soak toor dal&channa dal for nearly 1 hr.Then in a blender grind fennel seed & dry red chilies coarsely.To this mix add chopped onion,garlic,coconut,curry leaves,fresh coriander leaves(1 tsp) and mix it well like the pic shown below.
2.Now make a round balls with this mix and steam them for 15 mins in idly steamer.
3.Cool down the dumplings/urundai for a min.
4.Heat oil in kadai/pan and add the seasoning item one by one then saute onion for 2 mins,then add the tomatoes,garlic and saute for few more min until they get tender and soft.Add tamarind juice(soak tamarind in hot water for 5 min) let it boil for 2 min then add turmeric pow,red chilly pow,coriander pow,salt and leave it to boil for 10 min.

5.Now add the urundai/dumplings the the gravy and leave it for 2 min,now garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.Remove from fire.
